Dr. Morgan Gwin

Originally from Edmonton, Dr. Morgan Gwin obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering before completing the DDS program at the University of Alberta in 2015.  She spent three years in private practice in the Edmonton area before returning to graduate school at the University of Washington to specialize in Prosthodontics.

The field of Prosthodontics deals with the replacement of missing teeth and oral tissues with the goal of restoring oral form and function so that patients can comfortably and confidently speak, chew, laugh and smile.  Prosthodontists have advanced training in smile esthetics, restorative dentistry, dental implants, full arch prostheses (patients may know these as “All on 4” or “fixed complete dentures”), and removable prosthetics (complete and partial dentures). She provides a range of treatments, from the restoration of single teeth to complex, full-mouth rehabilitations that involve teeth, implants, or a combination of both.

Dental Veneers in Calgary

If you have minor smile imperfections such as a chip on your tooth, discolourations, or even a small gap between your front teeth, dental veneers are a great solution to fix your smile.

Dental veneers are bespoke, ultra-thin shells of composite or porcelain material that cover the front surface of the tooth. They are customizable according to the size, shape, length, and colour you want, making them the perfect treatment for cosmetic smile makeovers.

Discover a quick and easy solution to improve your natural smile and boost your confidence with dental veneers in Calgary at Chinook Dental Group.

What are dental veeners?

Dental veneers are a brilliant cosmetic dental solution that corrects smile blemishes, improves the appearance of your teeth, and enhances your smile. These modern dental restorations use wafer-thin coverings that look and feel like natural teeth. Because they are very thin, your dentist can preserve more natural tooth structure, making it a highly conservative treatment.

Each dental veneer is individually tailored to you based on the principles of smile design and how you want your smile to look. If you have a discoloured, chipped, or worn-out tooth, a dental veneer can mask these imperfections. A veneer is also made so that it blends seamlessly with the rest of your natural teeth.

But if you want a dramatic smile makeover, a set of veneers on the front teeth can also be done. This is also an alternative treatment for orthodontic braces if you have spaces between your teeth or minimal tooth crowding. This quick and easy fix results in a symmetrical and proportionate smile that can improve your overall appearance significantly.

  • Discoloured teeth

  • Severely worn out teeth

Types of Dental Veneers

At Chinook Dental Group, we offer several types of dental veneers to give you options depending on your smile needs, budget, and lifestyle.

  • Composite Veneers: This dental veneer involves applying tooth-coloured composite resin material directly on the surface of your tooth. The main advantages of composite veneers over other veneer types are cost and convenience. Composite veneers are a quick fix that can be completed in just one dental visit. They are also a relatively more affordable option. However, composite resin is not as reliable for the long-term. They can easily stain if you frequently consume staining food or drinks. They are also less durable and can wear down with daily chewing and biting.
  • Porcelain Veneers: This type of dental veneer mimics nature at its finest as one of the most natural and aesthetically pleasing restorations in dentistry. They are very robust, durable, and long-lasting. At Chinook Dental Group, our bespoke porcelain veneers are made by expert ceramists. Each is milled with fine-quality materials and advanced equipment to create highly aesthetic results that meet your smile goals. Compared to composite veneers, porcelain veneers are resistant to stain and wear, so they can last you many years. With good oral hygiene and proper veneer aftercare, porcelain veneers can last up to fifteen years. With these benefits, porcelain veneers are considered the ideal veneer treatment.
  • No-prep Veneers: True to its name, no-prep veneers require minimal to no tooth reduction. If needed, your dentist will only remove a very small section of the tooth surface, about as thin as a contact lens. Because they are very thin, no-prep veneers can be easily removed to reverse the procedure. And because only a small part of the tooth is involved, you should expect no complications, such as tooth sensitivity, upon removal.

However, not everyone is a candidate for no-preps. Because of its thinness and translucency, it cannot cover darker stains and large chips on teeth.

Dental Veneers Procedure

The procedure for dental veneers depends on the type. Composite veneers are the quickest to make because they do not require additional lab work. Your dentist simply prepares the tooth, then directly adds layers of resin to the tooth surface. Once the desired shape is achieved, it is cured in place and polished to achieve a natural finish.

But, if you are looking to get porcelain or minimal prep veneers, here’s what you can expect the procedure to be:

  • Shade selection: One of the most crucial steps in cosmetic dental treatments such as veneers is determining the right shade for your restoration. For full smile makeovers, veneers can be made lighter to give you a brighter smile. But ideally, they should colour-match the rest of your teeth. After this, an impression is taken to get you ready for your new smile.
  • Tooth preparation: Then, local anaesthesia will be injected and the tooth will be prepped. Your dentist only needs to shave minimal tooth structure, which means most of your natural tooth will be preserved. Then, another impression of your teeth will be taken and sent to the lab so they can get your veneers done.
  • Temporary veneers: While your veneers are getting fabricated in the lab, you are to wear temporary veneers. These are only provisional restorations and are not as durable so they should be used with caution.
  • Fitting and Cementation: Before your dentist puts the veneers in place, your dentist will check the fit and appearance. If everything is good, the veneers can be placed in their proper position. Excess cement material will be removed before they are cured in place. Then, the veneers are polished well for a beautiful smile.

Dental Veneers Maintenance

Good oral hygiene and frequent dental visits for smile upkeep are the most important aftercare tips for veneer patients. These will keep bacteria from lodging into the veneers and causing decay on the natural tooth. If decay occurs, your dentist will have to remove and replace the existing veneers.

So, make sure that you maintain a good hygiene routine. Brush your teeth with fluoride-rich toothpaste twice a day, floss, and use an antibacterial mouthwash. These are standard care practices for a healthy smile and long-lasting veneers. Also, visit your dentist twice a year for a comprehensive dental check-up and professional teeth cleaning.

Cost of Dental Veneers

At Chinook Dental Group, we follow the Alberta Dental Associate (ADA) Guide for dental fees. This is a standard fee guide for the dental procedures we offer in our office. With this, we can provide the utmost transparency to our patients.

Composite veneers are the more affordable veneer type. At Chinook Dental Group, our composite veneers start at $382 per tooth. Meanwhile, porcelain veneers cost starts at $948 per tooth.
